A little camp-style music...ah, the memories...
A WALK THROUGH TIME...
This camp news page history focus will be on the outdoor campfire center throughout the ages. Although the location of the outdoor campfire center has not changed since Camp Arbolado began, its design was much, much different before the 1950s. Along with the tearing down of the old cabins and building new ones of a more modern style in the 1950s, the outdoor campfire center underwent the same transition as well. In 2002, the outdoor campfire center was dedicated to one our our past beloved camp directors, Conley Davies.
Prior to the 1950s, the outdoor campfire center used wood construction materials exclusively. There were no outdoor lights, electricity, or piped water. One large fire pit served as the central focus, situated between a low wooden stage and audience seating benches. The back wall was made from wood as well. The benches were arranged in a tight horseshoe arrangement around the central fire pit.
The outdoor campfire center of today (Conley Davies Memorial Campfire Center) has outdoor lights, electricity and piped water. The stage is a large concrete slab and there are two fire pits, one at each end. The benches are a wood - concrete structure and the back wall is made from concrete block. The audience seating benches are situated between the stage and back wall and arranged in a wide semicircular affair.
